a chef walks into a kitchen
No this is not a bad joke...but an example of the small world we live in now.
I was prepping on the line in my am kitchen yesterday when a strange chef came in from the dining room. He works across the street at a new winebar/bistro and wanted to borrow some bay leaves. As I was looking, he asked if he knew me. I said I don't know...( I am TERRIBLE with names but pretty good with faces), and I said he looked familiar. He asked if I had been up east. I said I used to be in Vermont. He said he used to be a student/instructor/employee at the school where Sarah and I taught. What a coincidence.
So we chatted for a few about what was going on and it turns out that there are a few other peeps in town from school as well. So between jobs I went to track one down.
Opening a new restaurant/bakery/gourmet food shop is none other than the former chef instructor who I had pledged to take the CMC exam with 8 years ago. He and I chatted and we both are very excited to see each other. Last I heard from both these chefs was that they were in Stowe running a restaurant. So anyway, I got to see the bakery, which just opened, and all the fun new stuff...and yummy looking goodies. And I am going in to talk to this chef about a gig there in the AMs as opposed to the one I have now which I don't really like. Good luck for me.
And lastly, as I was on the line during a very busy and super smooth dinner rush, a chef from down the street came in to say hi to the CdC. Turns out that he is the same chef the other two guys had mentioned to me earlier during the day as being in town...and he is the exec a couple blocks over. Also turns out that he is a former classmate of mine...same class, different block...from 8 years ago. Although I remember the face...I couldn't have placed him without all the other details from the other two. Blocks in school hardly ever interact personally unless you live in the same dorm or know someone who knows someone...at least for me. He and I are going to catch up when we can.
So the culinary world is shrinking for me...and fortunately I have bumped into and old friend/colleague/mentor that I like a lot and hopefully has something for me.
